Want to hide your belly and still look fabulous? Below you’ll find lots of ideas and tips on how to hide a belly or stylishly cover up or disguise a tummy.
Why would you want to hide your belly?
Many women after 40 experience weight gain on their bellies, especially after going into peri-menopause or menopause.
Your waist may disappear and you will start to develop more characteristics of the apple body shape
If you are trying to cover up a tummy, it can be easy to do the opposite and make yourself look bigger than you really are.
Thankfully there are many things you can do to hide your belly, so that it doesn’t get in the way of looking fabulously stylish!
Check out my 15 tips below on how to hide your belly with the right clothes.
Read our article on the best shops for the apple body shape.
Hiding your belly in spring and summer
Many of you will be heading into warmer weather now, which is something to look forward to. It can be easier to hide a belly during the cooler months when it is natural to add plenty of lovely layers too create long, sleek lines.
However, that’s not to say you can’t use many of the tricks below during warmer weather too. You can still opt for draped, asymmetrical styles, wrap styles where you can alter the belt for the most flattering effect, or long cardigans and lighter weight ruanas for an elongating effect.
Alison @wardrobe_oxygen above (read her style interview here) looks stunning in her print jumpsuit. Wearing a print is a great way to ‘confuse’ the eye and disguise a belly. Wearing colorful shoes is another good tip as that draws the eye in a different direction to the tummy.
Steal her look with this similar jumpsuit (other options here and here), sandals and earrings.
For more inspiration, read our top tips and tricks on what to wear in summer.
Now, onto my 15 tips. Read on for more flattering layering tips.
1. Don’t wear tight or clingy garments over your belly and choose tops with ruching or drape
If you want to look stylish and highlight your strengths, it is best not to wear tight tops.
They will accentuate every fat bubble you have and draw attention away from you and your fabulous clothes.
Rather choose tops that have some draping or ruching.
Hide your belly with the right tops
A crossover top is very effective and this one creates asymmetrical vertical lines which is an extra bonus.
Plus, you can choose a top which comes in new season colors.
Karen Kane is a good brand to look out for to find flattering, layered, crossover tops.
Karen Kane Asymmetrical Crepe Top
Below is a wrap blouse that is also effective at hiding bellies as it doesn’t cling to your tummy. It also has a flattering v-neck which can help to lengthen (rather than widen) your silhouette.

2. Wear leggings or skinnies with longer, draped or asymmetrical tops
Leggings or stretchy pants that tuck in the tummy will be your best friend.
They will fit comfortably around your belly and tuck it in a bit.
Also, with so many wonderful tunics and long tops to choose from, you will look fabulous. No-one will notice your belly!
For more tips and examples see how to wear leggings.
Choose the right leggings that tuck in your stomach
A favorite amongst 40+style readers are the Zella leggings.
Zella Live In High Waist Leggings
For a very affordable option that has 1000s of good reviews on Amazon, you can’t beat the Satina high waisted leggings. Wearers say they keep their shape all day.

Choose the right tunics that make you look good in your leggings or jeans!
Look out for long or asymmetrical tops and sweaters.
Wearing leggings underneath can let your hero pieces stand out.
The tunics below can easily be layered with a longer cardigan or shorter jacket and will help to distract the attention from your belly.
Below are some tunic tops you could try.

3. Create vertical lines to hide your belly with long cardigans, jackets and ponchos
Layering is very effective to disguise a belly and is much easier to do during fall and winter, when you will want to use layers to stay warm. You can add a cardigan or a jacket.
However, it is definitely still possible to use this technique during spring and summer depending on where you live. Rather than a coat, you could opt for a lightweight cardigan, a sleeveless vest or a kimono.
Waterfall or straight designs can both work and will create a nice vertical line which will create the illusion of length and distract the eye from your belly.
Or you could wear a block color such as navy, red, black or gray underneath this cardigan style below, thus creating a slimming column effect down the center of your outfit.
Begonia.K Maxi Sheer Duster Cardigan
Misook Long Colorblocked Cardigan
Below are more examples of outfits where you create a long lean line and hide the belly.
Layering for any season – use a long cardigan or a short jacket
Creating vertical lines with cardigans (as discussed above) works really well, but you can also wear shorter jackets to hide a tummy.
If you pop a biker jacket over a longer top, you confuse the eye so that the different hem lengths hide your belly.
Layers are definitely your friend when it comes to hiding a belly.

Below, the longline cardigan will create nice long lines, drawing the eye away from your belly.
Made by Johnny Draped Cardigan – Vince Crop Muscle T-Shirt – Wit & Wisdom ‘Ab’Solution Slim Straight Leg Jeans – Aerosoles Cosmos Heeled Sandals – Marc Jacobs The Small Tote – Majorica Tender Knot Necklace
The longer your cardigan, the longer and leaner you will appear, although you usually don’t want to go longer than 2/3 from the height of your shoulders to the bottom.
Short straight cardigans will hide your belly too, but will have an overall more boxy silhouette so you need to be more careful when styling these.
You can layer in summer and winter
You can still layer in spring and summer depending on the weather where you are, you just need to choose lighter fabrics.
Instead of a cardigan, you can also choose a vest. A long vest is perfect for creating long, lean vertical lines, but you can opt for a shorter waterfall vest too.
Layer your (sleeveless) top with a sleeveless vest. It work well for all seasons. This vest cardigan from Amazon can be combined with many tops and will look great over skinny pants and jeans. You can also wear with a tank top and shorts for summer. For winter, you could wear over a long-sleeved sweater.
It has the benefit of being asymmetrical too which makes it even more flattering.
Made by Johnny Draped Cardigan
If it’s very warm where you are, or if you’re on a summer vacation, you could look out for a draped crochet cardigan, which could also double as a swim cover-up.
For more options on wearing vests you may like to check out this article for lots of options on how to wear a long vest.
4. Dresses that hide belly bulge – Choose dresses that don’t cling and/or have a draping element
Make sure that your dresses don’t cling around the tummy area. Dresses with a draping element around the tummy area often work.
Asymmetrical dresses work well too as they draw attention away from the belly and create a vertical line.
Dresses that don’t cling and which also have patterns are also great to hide the tummy area.
The dress below is draped just right to draw attention away from the belly and creates a flattering vertical line.
If you add a statement necklace at the top, you will further distract the eye from the belly area as the eye will be drawn upwards.

5. Don’t emphasize your tummy by adding accessories like belts right on top of them, rather belt higher
When choosing a coat, top or cardigan, you don’t have to avoid belts altogether.
Simply make sure that the belt sits a bit higher, so you aren’t drawing attention to your belly at its widest point.
Again, patterns can help to take attention away from a larger tummy too and in combination this can do the trick.
Play around with where and how you fasten your belt to see what looks most flattering for you.
Below are belted styles you can try.
The patterns on the Allegra K top (below) will also help to confuse the eye, which can be another effective technique for hiding the belly.
6. Wear tops over your skirts and pants and don’t tuck them
Tucking draws attention to your (non-existing waist again) so better to avoid that.
This is because if you tuck in your shirt, you will create a line across your tummy at its widest part.
Instead, leave your top outside of your skirt or pants.
However, pay attention to overall balance and don’t let your top end at the widest point of your hips, as that may also be unflattering.
A short blouse that loosely falls on your tummy will also work really well for many women.
Hope for Flowers Gradient Gathered Blouse
7. Flattering clothes for big stomach – Don’t wear garments that are bulky around the tummy area
You don’t want to make that area even bigger with pockets or other embellishments.
However, a vertical loose drape like this cardigan below could work as it elongates and does a good job at hiding. Reviewers say it is beautiful, comfortable, and reasonably priced.
Lock and Love Draped Open Front Cardigan
8. What to wear to hide a big stomach – Choose asymmetrical tops to hide your belly
Asymmetrical tops create vertical and diagonal lines and break up your silhouette so they are great for disguising tummies.
Naadam Asymmetric Patchwork Button-Front Shirt
Chiara Boni La Petite Robe Tremarz Asymmetric Top
You could also add a poncho over the top of your outfit like the one from Amazon (below) which is available in a huge choice of colors. Reviewers say the fabric is soft, and it elevates any outfit.
Deborah @deborahgates_ above (read her style interview here) opts for a high-low top and teams it with a statement necklace layered over the top.
Recreate her outfit with this similar tunic (another option here), shorts, sandals, clutch, earrings and necklace.
9. Use tops with prints
Prints are very effective in hiding bellies and you should definitely consider adding a few in your wardrobe.
If you combine a printed top with one of our belly-hiding tips above, no one will notice your tummy!
Elie Tahari Sloane Silk Floral Asymmetric Blouse
Carolina K Peacock-Print Satin Shirt
Masai Copenhagen Becca Printed Blouse
You can find many more asymmetrical tops and dresses here.
10. Use pants that tuck the tummy in
The pants you wear can make a huge difference to how big your belly will appear.
Be mindful of not buying pants that end in the middle of your belly and create a huge bulge.
Instead, you want to wear pants that have a higher rise and that are capable of tucking your tummy in.
Find out what are the best tummy control jeans in stores now.
I already mentioned some of my favorite leggings that are strong enough to do this under #2 above, but skinny pants can do this job too.
You can also consider tummy tucking jeans. Some of these jeans have an elastic waistband, and some have a regular fastening but are made from stretchier fabric with clever control panels. Reviewers say the secret sculpting jeans (below) are classy enough to wear for work but can be dressed down for casual days.

11. Use shapewear
Of course, shapewear like these shorts that tuck the tummy, is very effective too in hiding the belly but, as I personally find it uncomfortable, I only use it for very special events.
Spanx Thinstincts® Breathable Shorts
For options on shapewear please read my article on the best shapewear for women over 40.
12. Highlight something else
When you think about how to hide your belly, it’s easy to become so focused on doing that you forget about everything else.
You may not be confident about your tummy, but what about the parts of your body that you do like?
Could you show off some cleavage, highlight your shoulders or showcase your lovely legs?
The top below for example, shows off the decolletage and draws the attention away from the tummy.
Santorelli Floral Georgette One-Shoulder Twist Blouse
If you like your legs, you could place the focus there instead of your tummy. That doesn’t mean wearing a mini skirt, but you could wear some lovely printed jeans to show your legs and a plain top so that the eye is drawn to your legs rather than your belly.
Chiara Boni La Petite Robe Skyla Zebra Print Pants
Or, rather than drawing the eye up, you could draw it down (or, of course, you could do both). A pair of bright shoes or on-trend booties will put the attention on your feet and legs rather than your tummy.
It’s all about hiding what you don’t like and drawing attention to what you do like.
Aerosoles Cosmos Heeled Sandals
Georgette @grownandcurvywoman above (read her style interview here) looks stunning in her stripe dress. Note that the dress draws the attention to the bust, while the diagonal stripes are slimming. The yellow accessories add a pop of color and draw the attention away from the tummy.
Get her look with this similar dress (other options here and here), handbag (another option here) and earrings.
13. Think about where your sleeves end
When you are thinking about hiding a tummy, you are probably focused on whether your top or dress drapes over your belly area or whether it clings.
However, don’t forget about your sleeves. If your sleeves end right at the point where your belly is at its widest, you will only draw attention to this area.
Look instead for sleeves which end above your belly or below at your hips. The right sleeve length for you will depend on your arm length and where your belly is biggest.
NIC+ZOE Petal Bloom Top (plus size)
14. Choose flattering brands
It goes without saying that some stores and brands are more focused towards women with supermodel-type figures, while others are better at designing for women who want to skim over certain parts of the body.
Some of my favorite brands which create clothes to hide a belly are.
15. Use accessories to hide your belly
I’m not suggesting you carry a handbag in front of your tummy to hide it! However, accessories can be a great tool to hide or distract from your belly.
You could, for example, wear a colorful scarf to draw the attention upwards to your face. Or, you can leave your scarf loose so it drapes down and creates a column effect to disguise your tummy. Statement necklaces are another good way to draw the attention upwards.
Madewell Soft Lid Shoulder Bag – Marc Jacobs The Small Tote – Majorica Tender Knot Necklace – Kendra Scott Kinsley Drop Earrings – Kenneth Jay Lane Geometric Drop Earrings – Kendra Scott Oliver Hoop Earrings – MK MATT KEELY Newsboy Hat – Millie & Boo 100% Pure Silk Scarf
You could also draw the eye upwards with your earrings or a stylish hat.
When it comes to your handbags, think about where they sit when you carry them. If, for example, you have a shoulder strap bag which ends at your belly, this will draw the attention there.
Choose a bag which sits further up or further down, or a bag that you carry in your hand as you can draw attention to your lovely legs. Don’t opt for a bag which is too small as this will look out of proportion.
Barb @barb_styling above wears her blouse untucked over her pants. A v-neck is flattering as it creates vertical lines, and draws attention to the neckline.
Steal her look with this similar top (another option here), pants (another option here), pumps and woven handbag.

Thanks for addressing an issue that is troublesome for many of us as we age. It’s made more difficult for those of us who are not apple-shaped, but rather hourglass figures that are generously built above and below waists that have grown larger over time.
Your advice on creating vertical lines is spot-on for those who may not feel comfortable with slim-cut pants or flowy tops. Vests, well-cut jackets and toppers, and long scarves and necklaces can do wonders!
Brilliant! Everything here looks great and is easy to wear. Thank you so much for this.
Hi! Thank you so very much for this article and your site! I’m wondering if you could add some advice for “dress up” options for the pear shaped woman? Weddings, cocktail parties, theater/opera outings, etc. I’m at a loss!
I am short (5’3″) and weigh around 130. My problem is that I have a liver condition which causes my stomach to swell to the point of causing stretch marks. People assume I’m anywhere from 8-9 months pregnant because my abdomen is also very firm. I’ve tried shapers but nothing is form enough. Even most doctors think I’m in my last trimester. I used to LOVE waist cinching clothes because I always had an hour glad figure. I no longer know how to dress or even my size. I can range anywhere from size 3 to size 8/10 within any given month. Because of this I usually hide in my house, no longer feeling sexy or confident. Only feeling like I’m pregnant 365 days a year. I really want to learn to dress with this body type, but am I stuck wearing maternity clothes for the rest of my life? I really want to feel confident again without looking pregnant. Is that even possible?? HELP!
Sorry to hear about your condition. If your belly is very pronounced it’s not possible to hide it completely but all the tips above will help camouflage it. Get good at selecting the right tops, use asymmetry and use layers. Also check out the tips on this page https://40plusstyle.com/how-to-dress-when-you-are-short-petite/
Sooo, what is a “waist”?
Ohh that thing? I can’t remember the last time I saw it.
I would like to know why all your models are a size 4? They do not have bellies that delivered twins. They are totally unrealistic to fit this artical . The styles are beautiful if you’re 5 ft. 10. How about using real people with real flaws to model before and after shots?
So none of these styles fit a 5 ft 3 with a real belly.
The person above asked exactly the same question. Here is the long reply https://40plusstyle.com/fabulous-40-plus-women/
The thing is I can choose either skinny young model or young plus size model. Brands simply don’t offer anything in between.
That does NOT mean that the items are shown are ineffective. Many of the items come in bigger sizes and if you follow the guidelines in this article, play with them and find out what works for you, your belly will be a lot less visible.
Very interesting article but why can’t we see real women with real bellies wearing your suggestions?
I am 62 covering my belly but I definitely don’t look like those models in the clothes in your blog when I look in my mirror.
I explain why that is at https://40plusstyle.com/fabulous-40-plus-women/
Maxi skirts I love, what top do I wear with them. my arms are showing signs of bat wings, so no tight sleeveless shirts. I also am 62 and so no shirts tucked in

Nice tips. Being a post menopausal pear shape, these are excellent tips. I do find it easier to workout and eat mostly produce to avoid a bigger tummy than trying to camouflage it.
Yes many fashion supplies use younger slimmer models but there are many glorious women of all shapes sizes on Sylvia’s articles. At 52 I always was mostly an hour glass shape, vwith a tendency to pear. I have a sweet tooth but am now finding in perimenopause that weight is sticking to the middle. Luckily my style suits these tips. I never ever tuck in, avoidclingy and love waisted/drapery items.
I love the suggestions you have given. What can I do if I am only 4 ft 11 in? Many of the asymetricals are Waaaay too long. Any suggestions?
You will have to look a bit harder for shorter versions. I know that some petites shop in girls department so that could be an option. For many more tips on petites check this article https://40plusstyle.com/how-to-dress-when-you-are-short-petite/
Thanks for the help Sylvia! Can you point me to some help with being short and wearing crop or capri pants in summer. I live in the desert and do not wear shorts. I also have hot flashes so need to wear appropriate clothing. Any help for that?
Thanks for all the help!
I offer help at https://40plusstyle.com/how-to-dress-when-you-are-short-petite/ and also https://40plusstyle.com/how-to-wear-capris-and-cropped-pants/
I have a REAL problem, very short 5ft2″ , big breasts 44E , short torso and large belly due to perimenopause. I need an outfit for a friend’s wedding and need to look really good in photos as I know everyone is going to make an effort!
You may like to have a look at these tips here https://40plusstyle.com/how-to-dress-when-you-have-a-large-bust/ and here https://40plusstyle.com/how-to-dress-when-you-are-short-petite/ I talk about choosing dresses for a wedding at https://40plusstyle.com/how-to-dress-mother-of-the-bride/ Hope you will find something great!
Thank you , as Im now well into the swing of Menopause, and my poor tum is quite big and sometimes high up near my ever shrinking bustline.
Your fashion tips are fantastic for me thank you…
I hope to re-arrange my wardrobe to be more 40 Plus tummy friendly..
Keep up the good work.
Just maybe you could cover foot ware for the 40 Plus woman with the tummy ideas please as my days of High high heels have well gone now…
Many thanks
Hi Cathy. Thanks! I have written several articles on shoes so you may want to do a search on ‘shoes’. This article is all about arch support shoes, with the comments section containing lots of great tips! https://40plusstyle.com/arch-support-shoes/
This was so helpful for me. After a hysterectomy, I had so much trouble figuring out how to dress my body as it began to morph into a different shape. From the bottom of my heart, thank you.
Great to read that this article helped you out Brittany. Have fun with style and dressing!
In addition to these wonderful ideas, I like to wear neck scarves to help ‘hide’ my belly. A scarf helps to draw the eye up away from the waist plus adds a splash of color. Plus, scarves can be so versatile for those on a budget! Several different looks can be created with just a few basic tops/pants/skirts etc. A girl can never have too many scarves! I have found some gorgeous ones in consignment shops while traveling around the U.S.
Yes great tip Diane!
Thank you for all the information about the shaped fit tops I am going to Penningtons or Additionelle to peruse their fall colours and fashions and find some of the tunics or shaped tops plus I prefer patterned pieces rather than plain! I am not sure about leggings because of lymphedema problems although they do look nice on the ladies in the photographs. I just purchased some loose vest type cardigans in blue marl and also in black/grey marl they are very nice and warm for the cooler days. Thanks once again for all your help you have given me some wonderful ideas 🙂
I used to get perfect clothing for my “pregnant” shape at from Silhouettes. Then they just disappeared. Now I can’t find a sheath that falls straight from the shoulders ANYWHERE. Everything has a waist. I also got a two-piece dress from them that was wonderful for camouflaging my belly, a skirt with a long flared top – but I spilled coffee on it, can’t get the stain out, and can’t replace the outfit, of course. Do you know of any place that actually sells sheaths? The ones I have are just crinkle cotton sleeveless summer dresses. I found that loose flowing garments are the best ones for me.
I think you should just look around at various brands. Even a slighly waisted tunic could fit well. Nordstrom has a great variety or check some of the shops on this page: https://40plusstyle.com/best-online-shops/ Otherwise, have you considered having your spoiled outfit copied by a tailor?
Marcia,
Have you considered taking up sewing? A lot of women (especially older women approaching menopause) have taken it up because they can’t find ready to wear that fits.
You could take your coffee-stained sheath apart and make a pattern from it, and have as many more made as you like. Sheaths are easy to copy and easy to sew, and if you already have one that fits you you won’t need to get into complicated fitting issues.
A great site for those starting out is PatternReview (I won’t put the url here in case that’s not kosher). Not only does it have lots of tips for new sewers starting out, you’ll also see hundreds of pattern reviews (with photos!) by women who look like real women, and you get to see how different clothes look on different body types and ages. Althought it could definitely use some tips like the ones Sylvia has posted here! (I believe there is a business opportunity there Sylvia, if I’m not mistaken…)
Sorry but I can not look past the anorexic models because I need a picture of how these clothes would look on a size 16 body that has many fat rolls.Send me the clothes and I’ll mode them for you. Dissapointed.
Not only plus size women have bellies and this article was written for those women too. There are many slim women who want to hide their bellies too. Anja (the 50+ woman with curly blond hair) is slim but has a profound belly that she is always hiding from view. However, I agree with you that plus size women were not well represented on this page and I have added several examples and images to improve that. I don’t own any of these clothes, but if you have good quality images of yourself applying some of the tips in this article, I would be happy to publish them.
Please use models with actual belly’s. If I looked like one of these skinny girls I wouldnt need to be reading your blog. I need some real life, real women for example. A size 4 just dont cut it as a woman with a big belly.
I understand Sandy but please read my reply above or check out this article https://40plusstyle.com/fabulous-40-plus-women/
I’m frustrated with some of the pics. Some of the models are extremely thin. I went into early menopause (I’m only 40) and went from a size 4 to a size 16 in a little over a year. I’ve never been heavy in my life. I wanted tips on how to dress with the figure I have now. It’s exactly the opposite of what I used to have. I’m big from the waist up now. The last thing I wanted to see is thin models wearing shape slimming styles when they clearly don’t have any weight issues!
I understand your frustration but as you know it’s still a fact that most brands use young and slim models to promote their products and I can’t change my own body. Of course I could have opted to not give you any visuals at all so you could just concentrate on the text but I still felt it was better to give you some examples. You can read a bit more on this topic here: https://40plusstyle.com/fabulous-40-plus-women/
Wow!! Amelia you just described me!! Size 8 even after 3 kids. Then meno hit went to a 16 but took a couple of years. Hate it!! I also am big from tummy all the way up! I wear tops that emphasize my bust then falls loosly down over my tummy. Like unusual necklines and embellishment around the bust area. I have lots of patterned tops to. I wear harem type pants for comfort. Hope this helps you a bit. Oh I also hate how they use skinny models!!
Sylvia, if you actually have anything to hide, you hide it masterfully! You never look disproportionate – ever!
Great tipsim always struggling I have had five kids I do have a spare tyre for a waist and it’s worse during times of bloating etc. the problem I have though is I live in a tropical climate so layering with jackets etc is out of the question and a lot of synthetic fibres can be very hot. Sort of limits the wardrobe a bit.
I do so too and it’s definitely more challenging. It’s even more important to buy the right tops that are not clingy. You could scroll through the section what I wore (under style) to get some inspiration for dressing in a hot climate.
Wear Empire Style??
That’s the very last thing I would do. Am I the only one that looks pregnant wearing these clothes?
I am 5ft tall and im apple shape im all belly and no bottom aged 43. Please help me
Hi Alisa. My best tips are already in the article. Other articles that may help you include https://40plusstyle.com/how-to-dress-when-you-are-short-petite/ and https://40plusstyle.com/how-to-hide-your-belly/
I agree with the comments on empire waists, they tighten at the top of the belly, making the belly pouf out and looking pregnant. I ant imagine how this works on anyone. Also read an article that belting a tucked in top (large belt) then wearing an overblouse or one of the draped jacket tops slendarizes your whole body. Anyone try this?
Not all empire waist tops are created equally though. Yes some can make you look pregnant but some can really work.
Just found this site. Love it!! My problem I have all my weight in belly, and no butt. 5 ’10 and it’s hard to find shirts long enough. Also I’m always pulling my pants up because they won’t stay up. Any suggestions?
Stretch pants can help but in the end the only real solution is to have your pants altered. You may also like to read this additional article with specific guidelines for tall women: https://40plusstyle.com/how-to-dress-when-you-are-tall-and-where-to-buy-the-best-clothes-for-tall-women/
Yes, I have a belly. Always have but it does get less noticeable at times. I try to wear tops, skirts, pants, dresses that hide this feature. It is very annoying and I do not wear belts or blouses tucked in as a general rule.
Thank you enjoyed finding your website. Interest information and good advice.
Welcome Linda. Hope you will enjoy the many articles and inspiration!
I love your honesty and good tips. You are much appreciated. Thanks a lot.
Is there any place that makes shirts for TALL plus-sized women?
{commence rant}
I’m 5’9″, around size 28, apple-shaped and long-waisted, and the worst problem I have dressing is finding tops that are long enough to camouflage the lower part of my stomach — even so-called tunic-length shirts made for average height women can be too short. I also have relatively slim legs in proportion to my midriff, so my pants are either tight in the waist and fine in the legs or fine in the waist and baggy in the hips. Seems as though in the ’90s when “leggings” weren’t a dirty word, I could find shirts that were long enough and wear leggings with them and I was content. I know that was 20 years ago and things sag, but I weigh less now than I did then, and … anyway. 🙂
{end rant}
Any recommendations? Thanks!
I have found that Evine. Com has a line called “one world ” I find many tops that not only hide my belly but also my sagging arms. They have a 30 day money back guarantee so you really can’t lose much by trying it.
Thank you so much for sharing. I had a personal surgery last year and menopause hit in a hurry. I’ve gained 25#s and can’t hide the pop belly anymore. Losing weight is a hard with being a Mom though I workout. Its discouraging to be only 32 and struggle with the body of what looks like a much older woman. I look forward to giving these tips a go!
Good luck Jessie. Let me know how you get on!
Great job on this article – very helpful and realistic!
Hi Sylvia!
I came across your blog whilst researching our article for – “5 tips on ‘No worries’ Sexy “. Great blog ! I’m absolutely going to bookmark your page – you have really nice tips that we can really learn from. Thanks, Sylvia and keep up the great articles ! 🙂
Sincerely,
Sin Ning
My only issue is the shape wear. I have Gird. My stomach area has chronic swelling and shape wear makes that issue worse.
Yes it’s not for everyone. I seldom wear it as I find it too uncomfortable. The right underwear like good camisoles can already make a big difference…
Thanks for the tips. One peeve of mine; I don’t understand how all the belly-hiding tips I read talk about tops flowing from empire waists. They make me look like I am pregnant! I get asked when the baby’s due!
Yes, all tips do certainly not work for everyone. These tips are just guidelines. Our bodies are all slightly different, so play around a bit with the advuce and see what works best for you.
I seem to have a figure of a pot bellied man! My problem is wide shoulders,
small bust, large stomach, slim bottom and legs.
5ft 9in tall. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
It sounds like some belly hiding tops will come in handy for you. Since you have nice legs you will want to put your attention there. Get well fitted straight or slightly flared pants and combine with a belly hiding top. Empire wast tops would work well for you. Combine with an A-line jacket to balance out your shoulders and give you more of an hourglass shape. You will also look good with a slight A-line skirt. As will an empire waist a-line dress that highlights your legs. Good luck! and if you need more help you can always post more questions in the style forum.
Just make an effort to stay away from foods high in sugar and processed foods.
Very true, but with hormone imbalance and all kinds of other things, I know that many women over 40 find it difficult not to accumulate fat around the belly. But yes, I would say eat less and eat healthy and hopefully that will keep the belly fat off!
Trust me I am no stranger to the difficulties with hormone imbalance, extra belly weight! Like so many of us the hormone imbalance affects our mood which for me results in emotional eating. My weakness is chocolate and rich desserts. I have yo yo most of my life.. But I found myself the happiest when I let go of the refined sugars and processed foods. My waist line improves, my skin glows and my mood improved immensely. You know I have a cousin a few year younger than me. She claims that I refuse to get old or I am not acting my age. She believes being over 40 is an excuse for letting yourself go. I believe to the contrary. Do we have to put a little more efforts? Yes, we do but at the end of the day it’s all worth it. Poor Madonna is getting so much flack for being fabulous at 50, she is 10 years my senior and boy I sure wish I could move like her. She’s my hero!!
It is definitely something I need to do as well. I have heard from so many women that refined sugars make them ill and I also find that I would be healthier without them. So thanks for reminding me that it really makes a difference! I also agree that you should work harder to stay healthy and in top shape after 40 and I’m a big Madonna admirer! I will write about this in the future, I’m sure.
Your comment inspired a new blogpost from me. Did you read it? https://40plusstyle.com/madonna-how-are-we-supposed-to-age/
Depending on the outfit that i’m wearing! The tummy area can be a problem! I’ve already incorporated some of your tips in my everyday life style.. But with certain outfits! Shapewear seems to work the best for me. Providing that your comfortable, shapewear can be a great addition to your wardrobe…
Great to read that some of my tips have been helpful to you. What I love about shape wear is that you can still wear some outfits (like tight dresses) that would not have looked good otherwise. Great for special occasions!
Being at the perimenopause/menopause stage in life, I find this article very useful, and helps me to confirm that I am on the right track in avoiding clothes that are too clingy and tight, not tucking in my tops etc.
Love your website! Thanks for sharing 🙂
Hi Erin, Thanks for your feedback! Also thanks for linking up to my site and your kind words. Really appreciate it!
I love the long olive/camel cardigan. Where’d that come from? I might need one!
Excellent tips! The tummy area is no problem for me so far, but I guess at some point it might be. My butt and thighs, on the other hand…..several of your clothing tips work wonders for that, too:)
Yes those too are my ‘problem’ areas as well. Should write an article on that….
Great tips! Thankfully my waist is still pretty slender, but it probably won’t be that way forever. Better wear my belts now!
Yes! I too am going to do my best not to lose my waist but when (peri)menopause sets in, you don’t know what’s going to happen….
